souvenir spoon engraved in the bowl with the Christian symbol "XP". London hallmark; date letter " "_ maker "E". This date letter is historic, being the first piece that Donald Spence had for the year 1975, the first year of a 25 year cycle that was mandated for all English assay offices by the U.K. "Hallmarking Act" of 1973 (for all gold, silver, and platinum). Bought in Cirencester, England in 1976 - a major Roman centre in Britain. The spoon is Roman in shape (hooked to sit on the rim of a cup) and was given as a "christening spoon' - from which derived the expression "born with a silver spoon in his mouth".
