The Governor General award given to William S. McClinton '12 in 1912. This nation-wide award is given to the student with the highest average in their school. William attended St. Andrew's from 1909 to 1912 and was a boxing champion and on the Honour Board. After graduation he attended the University of Toronto to study medicine, and later volunteered for the war effort. He joined the 37th Canadian Infantry Battalion and fought at the Battle of the Somme, earning himself the Military Cross. After returning home from the war and eventually becoming a doctor, he tragically died at the young age of 35 from falling out of a boat in Georgian Bay.
