- Public Description
- A copy of a personal record belonging to Field Marshal Montgomery of Alamein, a commander during WWII. While he served in both world wars and the Irish War of Independence, he was well-known for being one of the commanders at the Second Battle of El Alamein in Egypt. This battle was won by the Allies, and was the first big victory against the Axis forces in the Middle East since 1941. Montgomery went on to take part in other campaigns in Tunisia, Italy, and most notably, the invasion of Normandy. He was known to be difficult to work with, nicknamed "The Spartan General". However, his skill as a general won the Allies many victories during the war, regardless of how insufferable his companions found him. This copy of his memoirs was gifted by him to the St. Andrew's College Chairman of the Board (and father of Headmaster D. Bruce Macdonald) John K. Macdonald in 1945.
